According to a study of seven countries published by the German Marshall Fund, Italians are the most suspicious of migrants, with almost 70% of respondents to an opinion poll saying that the majority of those in their country are there illegally. At the other end of the scale, most Germans and Dutch thought that immigrants were there legally. However, when asked if immigration was a problem or an opportunity, more Germans saw as it as a problem. In troubled economic times hostility to migrants may grow.

In realtà la domanda è assai mal posta. Come si legge anche tra i commenti.

Based on the report, The Economist appears to be making a serious error in interpretation. If someone asks me how many migrants are in my country illegally, they are not asking my “attitude to immigration” but my estimate (inevitably based on media reports) of a factual matter.
